Growing Through Meaningful Learning

In the Special Education Department, learning is built on connection, creativity, and the belief that every student deserves a pathway to success. Each day, our classrooms come alive with hands-on experiences designed to make learning meaningful, memorable, and fun.

To strengthen math fluency, students use rhymes and vivid visuals from “Multiplication the Fun Way.” These playful characters and stories allow students to anchor multiplication facts in something concrete and enjoyable. The classroom walls are filled with bright illustrations students reference daily, and the room often echoes with laughter as students proudly recite facts they once struggled to remember.

Learning extends beyond traditional worksheets. Through project-based assessments, students are given opportunities to show what they’ve learned in ways that highlight their strengths. Whether creating timelines for Chasing Lincoln’s Killer or assembling geometric animal mosaics, students take ownership of their learning. These projects not only measure understanding—they build confidence, critical thinking, and independence.

To reinforce positive habits, the department uses an Academics and Behavior Rewards Program. Students earn points for hard work, responsibility, and perseverance—points that can be traded for items in the class store. One of the most coveted rewards is a cozy fleece blanket, and students beam with pride when they’ve saved enough to earn one.

The department is also leading the way in AI integration to support personalized learning. Using ALEKS, an adaptive learning platform, students work at their own pace to fill skill gaps and strengthen foundational knowledge. This allows teachers to spend more time working one-on-one or in small groups while empowering students with immediate feedback and individualized support. Recently obtained grants have expanded these efforts, allowing for more flexible seating options and the addition of a 3D printer—bringing hands-on, creative opportunities directly into the math curriculum.

Across every lesson and activity, the Special Education Department remains committed to meeting students where they are, celebrating their growth, and helping them discover what they are capable of achieving. Through innovative teaching, engaging tools, and a warm, supportive environment, students are not only learning—they are thriving.
